Not in Australia! They eat breaks for breakfast Downunder. Of course the popular style is evolving, and live electronics acts are slowly taking over the music festivals, however there is still a huge breaks following, especially in Sydney and Perth. Recent festival headliners include Freq Nasty, Plump DJs, Kid Kenobi (Oz' No.1 Breaks DJ), Soulwax, 2ManyDJs, Malente...to name a few. I'm still searching the NYC scene for good breaks, if anyone knows a regular club night, or local DJs, please holler!

I'm so sad to hear they canceled Boombox. I loved that channel. I used to listen to it all the time at work.

For breaks and dubstep vinyl, I use www.chemicalrecords.co.uk (best selection that I know of)
For DnB and dubstep vinyl I use www.redeyerecords.co.uk

For digital copies I use

Di.fm
IdealSound.ca
itunes

In my opinion, nothing gets a crowd dancing faster than breaks.

I would say that the innovation went out of breaks when they became popular. The deluge of new school breaks records that came out as it became solidified as a genre were far less innovative (IMHO) than the breaks records from before that time. I'm personally glad that they have become less popular and foks have moved on because the quality of vinyl releases has gone way up even as the quantity has dwindled.
The uptempo break, let's say 120-140 bpm, will endure as a beat simply because it's really fun to dance to, so no worries there.

I just don't see people selling vinyl breaks anymore, but that's the case with all vinyl. And I feel like perhaps the dance scene is moving past them as a favorite. But it's a bedrock rhythm that I can't get enough of. I want more resources for buying records or downloading stuff other than additech, Dance Records and Beatport. Any ideas?

However, on the 12th, Sirius and XM began merging their programming and cancelled the only breaks/electro radio station out there, Boombox 39. While they put Liquid Todd out to the dole, I have to say that's not the worst part of it. The worst part of it was that the two networks went from about 7 electronic music stations to just three. Now you have cheezy house, really cheezy house and the chill channel (which is good but not satisfying). I think that the demise of Boombox somewhat heralds the fact that pop culture has moved on from breaks.

And that's fine with me. I still love em. I will still spin em and will definitely be dancing to em.

breaks are alive and kicking

I spun a breaks set on 9.6.08 at Sets on the Beach in Ventura and then again at BassFREQ this last Thursday.

Here is a copy of a breaks set I did a couple months ago.

too true, everyone seems to be diggin the dubstep... electro-house/tech funk... some people have gone techno...

my current favorite is one of your boys, toast... mr. rogers has rocked my world the last few times i saw him. want to hear more from heyoka and mimosa... cumulous is working on some nice stuff... enjoying hearing pym develop his sound.

seems dnb is setting off dance floors again. who knows what will come in the next few months, what new sound or producer will catch everyone's ear at the summer festivals. a lot of our friends are working on new tracks and sounds. don't know really what's going on worldwide, it's the job of you djs to bring all of that to my attention.

speaking of which, though i'm delighted to be surrounded by so many people making quality music i feel sometimes like everyone is booking producers to play their own music over booking a dj who can rock the crowd. i feel sometimes, especially with the newer producers, that though their sound is awesome it's not enough to hold my attention or move me through an entire hour.

i guess i mean to ask where the innovation is at? i have actually not been paying a lot of attention to breakbeat producers, and all the new hype seems to be around dubstep. anyone you're stoked on?
